GONE GIRL REVIEW

*MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS*
Based on Gillian Flynn's best-seller novel, Gone Girl is a thrilling drama about the mysterious disappearance of Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) and the media surrounding prime suspect, Amy's husband, Nick (Ben Affleck).
The film doesn't take long to set up the premise. Nick comes home and discovers that Amy has gone missing and calls the police. As days and weeks past, the media surrounding this mystery increases and Nick must prove to the world that he didn't murder his wife. But what did happen to Amy?
This is one of the most thrilling mysteries because, unless you read the book (which I didn't), you won't know what happened to Amy until midway through the film. The revelation was a huge surprise as, although I knew Nick didn't murder his wife, I thought he might have something to do with her disappearance. Affleck gives a strong performance as Nick, a man who is trying his hardest to prove he didn't kill his wife and must find out what really happened to her. The stand-out performance, however, is Pike as Amy. In the beginning of the film, we see her as the perfect wife for Nick but, as the film goes on, we learn that there is more to her than meets the eye. She is certainly someone we wouldn't mess with after watching this film, that's for sure. It's no surprise that she was nominated for an Academy Award in 2015 for Best Actress in a Leading Role. The rest of the cast give good performances but that's to be expected from a drama like this.
The film isn't for the lighthearted. Director David Fincher used dark and grim tones to set the film's mood. It is also very violent, especially towards the film's end, so if you aren't a fan of blood then I'd suggest avoiding this film as there is a scene that involves a murder and a lot of blood.
A lot of mysteries I've watched aren't thrilling at all but, fortunately, Gone Girl is a compelling watch. It's one of those films that you have to pay attention to because, if you miss a line of dialogue, you may miss a important clue or something that's important to the whereabouts of Amy. I had to watch this film twice as there were a lot of things I missed which made me enjoy the film more.
Overall, with strong performance from both of its leads and a comelling mystery at the centre of its plot, Gone Girl is a thrilling drama.
7/10
