KICK-ASS REVIEW

*MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS*
Have you ever wondered what it'd be like to be a superhero? Have you ever actually tried to become a superhero? Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) has. In the beginning of the film, he is an unnoticed high school student who is also a comic book fan and ponders the idea of becoming a superhero. His friends think he's crazy but he is adamant to the idea and buys a vibrant superhero costume and becomes 'Kick-Ass', hence the film's title.
The reason why this is one of the funniest superhero films is because, in most superhero films, the protagonist is great at defeating the villains and becomes a superhero straight away but in Kick-Ass, Dave fails at his first try and ends up getting stabbed when trying to stop two guys from stealing a car. Luckily, he is fine and doesn't let this incident stop him.
He's not the only superhero though. Nicolas Cage plays Damon Macready whose alter ego is Big Daddy along with his daughter, Cindy (Chloe Grace Moretz), whose alter ego is the bad ass Hit Girl.
And with every superhero film, there has to be a villain and, in this film, it's Frank D'Amico (Mark Strong) who is a drug dealer.
The film is based on the comic book series of the same name and the actors in this film really bring the characters to life. Aaron Johnson is perfectly casted as the awkward yet determined Dave. I think this is one of his best roles. I also loved Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy, he tries so hard to be like Batman, which his costume is based on, yet fails but that's what makes his character likeable. Mark Strong is one of the best villains, he doesn't care about his actions and makes money out of selling and dealing drugs. He has a load of henchmen to do all his work for him. It's not long until he finds about Kick-Ass and he becomes determined to get rid of him. But the best character in this film has to be Hit Girl. Don't let her age and innocent looks fool you, she is lethal. We first meet Mindy and we see that she has a close bond with her father but then we see their alter-egos and we finally see who they really are. Chloe Grace Moretz is brilliant as Hit Girl, I loved her from the moment I saw her.
And with every superhero film, there are plenty of fight sequences, accompanied by a great score.
There are also plenty of  witty references to popular superhero films, which I loved and thought were really funny.
What makes this film better is that it's directed by Matthew Vaughn, who is one of my favourite directors. In case you don't know, he has directed films such as X-Men: First Class, Stardust and Kingsman: The Secret Service (read review here) and if you're a fan of those films, I guarantee you'll love this one.
If you like comedy and superhero films and don't mind a bit of violence and profanity (as there is a lot!), then I recommend this film.
8/10
