RAT RACE REVIEW

*MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS*
With hilarious performances from some of the most famous comedians, including John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson, Whoopi Goldberg, Cuba Gooding Jr and many more, this has to be one of the funniest, yet most underrated, comedy films.
The film focuses on several different people who, after meeting famous billionaire Donald Sinclair (John Cleese), must race to a locker that is filled with $2M in Silver City, New Mexico.
There are brilliant sequences throughout as this random group of people race to win a bag full of money. One of the best sequences is when brothers, Duane (Seth Green) and Blaine (Vince Vieluf) Cody manage to destroy the airport radar with their car. What makes this sequence even more funny is that it's all done to the famous tune of 'In The Hall Of The Mountain King'. It's perfect this sequence as it brings tense not in a dramatic way, but in a comedic way. It shows what stupid things people are willing to do in order to win a bag full of cash.
Like I mentioned earlier, this film is full of great performances from every actor involved. Cleese is perfect as the self-indulgent billionaire who, during the race, place various bets with his fellow rich friends. Another hilarious performance comes from Rowan Atkinson as an eccentric Italian tourist, Enrico Pollini. He is the craziest out of the group yet the most sensible. He is the only racer not to steal a car in order to get to Mexico. Whoopi Goldberg is great and is at her most funniest here, it's because of this film she's one of my favourite comedic actresses. She plays Vera who has just reunited with her long lost daughter, Merrill (Lanai Chapman). The two bond by taking part in this race. Cuba Gooding Jr is very funny as the football coach that everyone hates, due to a football game where he flipped a coin to decide the fate of the game.
What I also loved about this film was the ending. Most comedies would have a predictable ending but not Rat Race. When I first watched this, I had no idea that the ending would result in the racers giving the money away to a charity. What also makes the ending great is that it includes a performance from Smash Mouth who performs his famous song, All Star, with the racers who then partake in crowd surfing. It's a feel good moment and always makes me smile.
This comes from director Jerry Zucker who is best known for creating popular comedies, Airplane and The Naked Gun. If you're a fan of the aforementioned films, you'll love this film.
Overall, a hilarious film with brilliant performances with some of the most beloved comedic actors.
7/10
